The Danube Limes in Bulgaria
Frontiers of the Roman Empire - The Danube Limes in Bulgaria is part of the Tentative list of Bulgaria in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List. It is a proposed extension of Danube Limes WHS.
The Danube Limes in Bulgaria is a late Roman defence system. It covers 32 chained locations of fortified sites and Roman military infrastructure. This part is known as the Limes Moesiae. Visible remains include Durostorum near Silistra.

Several countries plan to extend the Limes inscriptions all the way East to the Black Sea to span the full width. The Eastern most point will be in Bulgaria. Silistra (Durostorum) on the Danube was the end of the Limes. The sheer size of the border fortifications are quite a feat by the Romans.
The Limes in Bulgaria was not a wall. The primary border was the Danube which in Bulgaria is a huge, hard to pass river. Instead of building walls the Romans build watchtowers and forts to guard the border.

Having walked a few kilometers along the German Limes I have to admit that the Bulgarian section is different due the Danube. So probably you can make a case that this should be a separate inscription. I wouldn't mind an extension of the existing site either.
Getting There
The locations of this site are all along the Danube in Bulgaria. We visited locations in Russe and one in Silistra.
While You Are There
Russe is a good base to visit the WHS of Northern Bulgaria, especially Ivanovo. You also have great views of the Danube.
Silistra is a bit less touristy and flashy than Russe, but you can also visit another TWHS, the Roman Tomb of Silistra.
Srebarna is along the road from Russe to Silistra. Be warned: It's one of the lowest rated WHS by our community.
